In 1995 craigslist.org was born in the Bay Area: a free, down-to-earth and uncensored bulletin board that revolutionized the ease and speed with which people could communicate, exchange goods and services, and create community.  Primarily focusing on housing, jobs, items for sale and personal ads, the site soon became a hub for San Francisco's wired community.

2003.  Craigslist is big.  Really big.  Over 1/3 of all Bay Area internet users utilize craigslist on a regular basis. Outside of the Bay Area, craigslist has spread to 31 cities across the globe, with no sign of slowing.  In San Francisco alone, the site receives over 23,000 posts daily, with page views close to 29 million daily.  With no advertising, no commercialization and only word-of-mouth promotion, craigslist has become a phenomenon.  And it's still free.

Our film:

From a single post on craigslist we assembled eight film crews and a soundtrack to document a random day-in-the-life of what has evolved into the world's largest community board. Not just the "Best-Of" or the "Success Stories", but a real, down-to-earth look at the fastest-growing grassroots cyber-community in the city that started it: San Francisco.

This is that day: August 4, 2003:

An Ethel Merman drag queen searches for the perfect backup band for her Led Zeppelin covers. A suburban professional woman assembles a diabetic cat support group. A couple seeks the perfect rabbi for their marriage.  An aging, would-be mother finds her ideal sperm donor. Doors for sale, one night stands, compulsive roommates, transsexual erotic services.  The mundane and the sublime, the ridiculous and the profound, all come together to paint a portrait of a thriving, humanistic community in the midst of an ever-accelerating culture.

BBC Horizon Project Poltergeist (Missing Neutrinos) - Full Documentary



This is the story of two genuine scientific heroes. For forty years, John Bahcall and Ray Davis were engaged in a single extraordinary experiment - to find out why the Sun shines. In the end they would triumph. Davis would win the Nobel Prize and, thanks to their work, a whole new theory about how the universe is put together may have to be created.

At the heart of this story is a tiny, utterly mysterious thing called a neutrino. Trillions of them pass through your body every second, touching nothing, leaving no trace. Yet neutrinos are one of a handful of fundamental particles in the universe, essential to every atom in existence and clues to what makes the Sun work. But their ghost-like quality made trapping and understanding them immensely difficult.

What then followed was a bizarre series of experiments. They led from a vat containing 600 tons of cleaning fluid, to a vast cavern in a Japanese mountain, to a hole in the ground in Canada two kilometres deep.

What they would reveal would stun the world of science. It seems that neutrinos may be our parents. They may be the reason why everything, including us, exists.

Horizon: Black Holes (BBC)



Black holes are one of the most destructive forces in the universe, capable of tearing a planet apart and swallowing an entire star. Yet scientists now believe they could hold the key to answering the ultimate question - what was there before the Big Bang?

The trouble is that researching them is next to impossible. Black holes are by definition invisible and there's no scientific theory able to explain them. Despite these obvious obstacles, Horizon meets the astronomers attempting to image a black hole for the very first time and the theoretical physicists getting ever closer to unlocking their mysteries. It's a story that takes us into the heart of a black hole and to the very edge of what we think we know about the universe.

Escuchando la Radio Cósmica. Hablamos con Pere Planesas

Las estrellas, galaxias y demás objetos que pueblan el espacio cósmico hablan distintas lenguas en forma de radiaciones que escapan a nuestros sentidos, pero hemos logrado captar con instrumentos ingeniosos. Las ondas de radio, descubiertas por los humanos para comunicarnos entre nosotros, resultaron ser una inesperada fuente de información de fenómenos cósmicos insospechados. Ahora apuntamos al cielo con radiotelescopios, unos instrumentos cuya historia tiene su inicio en unas emisiones extrañas captadas poco antes de la última contienda mundial. Nos cuenta su historia Don Pere Planesas, astrónomo del Observatorio Astronómico Nacional y miembro de la Unión Astronómica Internacional.

Eureka - El laboratorio subterráneo de Canfranc

Descripción del programa

Es una instalación singular de ciencia española que está situada bajo el Monte Tobazo, en los Pirineos Aragoneses. Es el segundo laboratorio subterráneo más grande de Europa y en él se desarrollan experimentos para estudiar el origen y la composición del universo. Neutrinos, materia oscura... El laboratorio se dedica a estudiar sucesos raros que ocurren pocas veces en la naturaleza. Está bajo tierra porque ahí se dan las condiciones ambientales precisas para que esos experimentos no se vean afectados por el entorno. Hablamos con su director asociado, con José Ángel Villar.

Eureka - Computación cuántica con Juan Ignacio Cirac, una mente privilegiada



Descripción del programa: Su campo es la física cuántica y acaba de recibir este año el premio WOLF de Física que muchos consideran como la antesala del Nobel, por sus investigaciones en física y computación cuántica. Ha ganado el premio Príncipe de Asturias de investigación científica y actualmente es director de la división teórica en el Instituto Max Planck de óptica cuántica en Garching, Alemania. Con él hablamos hoy en Eureka (RNE). Nos explica porque un átomo puede estar en dos lugares a la vez y las complicadas leyes de la física cuántica, que para él son tan evidentes y a los demás nos sorprenden.. Sus compañeros dicen de él que es un chico normal que hace cosas extraordinarias. Que hace preguntas que a otros no se le ocurren. Tiene solo 47 años y es uno de los exponentes más sólidos de la ciencia española.
